Dealing with Poker Downswings with Grace and Strategy

A downswing in poker is bad. Very bad. Soul crunching, teeth grindingly bad. We’ve found ourselves looking at day after day of miserable poker and feeling like we would be better off closing our accounts and doing something else with our time… like complaining about it on Facebook.

Okay, kidding. The reality is that every poker player is going to have some bad days. You might fixate a little on all of your losses, but this isn’t something that you want to do forever.

When we’re playing a lot of poker and things start going badly, we know that it’s part of the process. But instead of trying to jump out of the anger process/cycle quickly, we give into it for a set amount of time. We log out of our poker account and just let the feelings take over for a little while. It’s often better to get it out of your system than think that you have to walk around carrying it with you from table to table and from game to game. We often dwell on losses more than victories, which is just an odd quirk of being human.

Look on the bright side — even though the luck aspect of poker can mess you up, it can also help you move forward. Weak players wouldn’t play poker if it were all about skill. They would have a bad experience every single time. However, the luck aspect of poker is how the weaker players get their “day in the sun” so to speak. They feel renewed by those lucky wins, and so they keep gambling. As you get better, you can take advantage of those players. Hey, that might sound predatory but this is poker — it’s all about becoming the best shark that you can be. You also want to make sure that you’re avoiding getting eaten by other sharks.

Poker Downswings

But you know what? Some days, you’re going to get ate up. And that’s okay. You can log out, take a break, and come back fighting. You might want to think about the other factors that could be affecting your game.

For example, you might be playing at a higher level than what you normally commit to. The higher the stakes, the more skilled the players will be. A lot of newcomers think that just because they were doing well at their local card sessions that they can rise to super high levels of poker without breaking a sweat. That’s just not the case at all. You want to always make sure that you’re starting small and working your way up. Analyzing 25,000-50,000 hands before you make a good decision on whether or not you should move up is incredibly important.

If you’re overly emotional — stop playing. We know that it can be hard to pull away from the table when you feel like the next hand “could be the lucky break”, but the retreat will do more for your game than anything else. When your emotions are running wild, you’re not going to be able to play your best game. If you’re stressed from real life, then taking your stress out on other players or on the cards isn’t going to help you become more profitable. If anything, it’s a surefire way to lose money.

Keeping your eye on downswings and handling them with grace is very importantly. You need to get up, look at yourself in the mirror and realize that your best game is yet to come. It doesn’t have to come today, but it will come eventually. For the time being, you’re going to rest and recoup, then get back into the game when you’re ready.

Focus on the positive aspects of poker, and you’ll find that the downswings eventually move along in the other direction. Good luck!

A Simple Jacks or Better Video Poker Strategy You Might Like

Video poker is best done with a fullpay machine. If you’re going to run strategy, you might as well be fully rewarded for your efforts.

You always want to look up all of the ways to play an initial hand on a big list. You’ll find these lists very easily in Google — just type in “jacks or better initial hands” to get a full list of possibilities. See, there’s not even any math involved, everyone is safe. :)

Video poker

Let’s go with the following list:

Four of a kind, straight flush, royal flush
4 to a royal flush
Three of a kind, straight, flush, full house
4 to a straight flush
Two pair
High pair
3 to a royal flush
4 to a flush
Low pair
4 to an outside straight
2 suited high cards
3 to a straight flush
2 unsuited high cards (if more than 2 then pick the lowest 2)
Suited 10/J, 10/Q, or 10/K
One high card
Discard everything

So let’s say you have the following hand:

4c Jc 5c Qc 4h

Your best plays would be:

Keep the low pair (seeing if you get three of a kind)
Keep the 4 to a flush (which would be profitable)
Keep the Jack and Queen (which makes sense since they are suited)

Those are really your best options at this point. You can look up probabilities online as well.

The best move to make when it comes to your hand would be to naturally keep the 4 to a flush. It pays out the most if you look at the pay table.

The biggest thing that you have to remember is that it is always about getting paid. So even though the three of a kind looks like the best possibility to keep, it’s really not. This is where newbie players can trip themselves up and lose out on a lot of gains.

You can’t expect to master video poker in just one sitting. Maybe that means that you’re going to have to practice a bit more than most, but that’s okay. It’s all about staying in the game, trying things out, throwing out what doesn’t serve you and having a blast all at the same time. Good luck!

What Are Marginal Hands in Poker Anyway

If there’s one concept that seems to cause discussion at every turn, it has to be hand selection. Poker is all about hand selection. The hands we play can end up making us a lot of money, or pulling us into a losing streak best washed away with the liquor of your choice. We’re bourbon people, if you must know.

Now then, what about this marginal hands thing? If you’re a new player that’s being picked on for playing too many marginal hands, you might wonder what the term really means. That’s what we’re here for — thank us later.

Simply put, marginal hands are neutral — they’re not terribly good, but they’re not the doggy 72o, either. That’s a wicked bad hand. Something like AJ would be considered a marginal hand.

There’s a time and a place to play hands. Even 72o can steal a pot that would otherwise have floated away from you. But when it comes to marginal hands, it’s all about looking at the situation around them. If you’ve got AJ, and the flop confirms keeping it — keep it. On the other hand, if you’ve got AJ and the flop comes down 6-9-3, you really need to go ahead and fold that sucker before you fire chips at a pot you’re not going to win.

Marginal Hands in Poker

Studying past hands gives you an idea of how marginal hands have worked for you in the past. If you weren’t aware of them, don’t beat yourself up. Just study the data. Study how you can become a better poker player. Life is way too short to beat yourself up about anything. In the world of playing poker of real money, you’re bound to make some mistakes. This is why many newbies are better suited to playing for fun before real money gets involved. By the time you start playing for real cash, you should be pretty desensitized to the whole concept of losing. You’re going to lose. You’re also going to win big. Making the numbers average out in the long run is what poker is truly all about.

So don’t get too caught up in marginal hands. For the players that are picking on you… just remember: they were fish once, too. Good luck!

Hold On – There Are Good Times Ahead in Poker

In a nutshell, poker is a matter of numbers. However, when you feel that you keep losing hand after hand, it can be hard to keep going. The truth is that poker is a matter of statistics. You could be losing for a solid week and still be a winner in the long run — it’s just a matter of data. You need to make sure that you’re thinking about the bigger picture. It’s tempting to focus on the short game, because you’re now playing for real money. If you’re completely stressed out by introducing the real money aspect into things, you might want to make sure that you’re going to handle that part first. Go back and play some free poker.

Poker is something that we do to relax, meet new people and yes, compete to a certain degree. If the competition angle is something that you can’t handle once money is involved you know that it’s an area that you will need to work on.

The point here is that you need to hold on because there’s going to be good times ahead of you in poker. If you study all of the biographies of famous poker players, you’re going to find that they struggled with the same issues that you have. You will just need to make sure that you’re thinking about the best way to go when it’s time to handle those losses. Running and hiding isn’t going to make you happy. You need to make sure that you fight the urge to give up. Even the professionals had struggles where they wanted to take a step back. You can move forward at your own pace.

play poker

You have to realize that there’s no race to the finish line here. You’ll get to be a better poker player over time. It’s tempting to think that you have to speed through everything but that’s really not the case at all. What you ultimately have to do is start thinking about what you really want in the world of poker. If you want to just be a casual player, then be a causal player. Not everyone has to be a professional that plays the Main Event of the WSOP. You have to think outside of those confines for a while.

If you need to unplug — unplug for a while. Don’t make it forever, of course, but if you need to back up for a while there’s nobody stopping you. Of course, you’ll run into hardcore poker players that will tell you that they will never stop playing poker nonstop. Let’s see where they are in five years.

No matter what you decide to do, know that we wish you the best! There truly are good times ahead in poker, but you’re going to have to stick around in order to achieve them!

Good News and Bad News in the Poker World

There’s always a bit of good news and bad news in the poker world to be had. We already covered the fact that PokerStars and Casino Gran Madrid are teaming up in a deeper way through a new poker room. PokerStars is on the move with other casinos as well — Hippodrome and Circus Groupe (London and Belgium, perspective). We can’t forget the Grand Waldo in Macau.

However, there’s a bit of bad news in the poker world as well. RPM Poker has shut down, as it has been sold to a 3rd party not disclosed at this time. Players aren’t completely in the cold — they can transfer the balances to Carbon Poker, Sportsbook.com and Players Only. Rakeback can also be moved over.

VIP tickets and tournament tickets have not been moved over yet, which is definitely a problem. Still, it is very likely that it will be resolved in good time.

Poker World

There’s some good news though, in other poker news — Phil Ivey announced his free to play social poker offering. It’s called IveyPoker and it will be available at the start of 2013. Fans can download the app on Facebook, iOS, and Android. It’s all about entertaining and teaching the world winning poker. It gives people the chance to play for fun while they learn new skills through video content. New and experienced players will be interested in the app.

Some might wonder why Phil Ivey would even bother with a free platform. There’s enough advertising potential to make it interesting, and it’s a way to keep his name out there. Nobody stays on top of the poker world forever, and being good now means that you have to do things in order to keep attention for later.

You have to definitely check out Phil Ivey when it drops. The guy knows his poker, and if he’s willing to teach (as most pros often are, for the right price), it’s important to pay attention.

That’s about it for now!

Poker History

Poker has a curious history, and nobody can be certain where the game originated. Many believe the game was the result of inspiration from a number of sources, including Persian, French, German and English games, though it is fairly certain that the first variations were being played around 1830 in New Orleans.

These early variations used a deck of twenty cards, and bets were made according to the value of each player’s hand.

Mississippi Riverboats were popular gambling venues, and the game is reported to have spread via these, particularly during the gold rush across Mississippi and the West.

As soon as the game began to spread, new variations using a full fifty-two card deck were born, such as “Draw” and “Stud” poker, which were invented as early as the American Civil War. Around 1925, the first instances of community card based poker were reported, giving birth to many of the more popular variations still played today.

The transition from the US to other continents is largely attributed to the US Military, who took various forms of the game overseas in the following years.

The next major event in the evolution of poker came in 1970, where the World Tournament was introduced. At last, poker players were recognised as professionals in their field. It was around this time that poker guides began appearing on the market, giving your average player an insight into the game strategies used by professionals. This dramatically increased the games popularity and made it much more accessible to those outside of gambling venues.

In recent years, poker has undergone perhaps its biggest change of all. Since the introduction of televised poker, the game has become a spectator sport, and is now enjoyed by thousands every day. Professional poker players are now more widely recognised, and many have even reached celebrity status with the increased television exposure.

It would be difficult to predict what is to become of poker, though it seems certain that the current variations are set to stay for the foreseeable future.

How to Decide How Much to Gamble at Poker

Playing poker can be lots of fun. However, it can be very easy to get carried away and spend more money than you intend to and so you need to carefully work out how much you want to spend before you start.

Have a think about how much money you can afford to use. You do not want to spend anything that you need to pay bills with or buy essential items. It is worth calculating how much you have left to spend on gambling and then think about whether you want to spend it all in one go or have a selection of games spread over days or weeks. The best thing to do is to work out a daily budget if you want to play often or an overall budget if you just think you will want to play once.

Gamble at Poker
Your budget will determine how much you spend per game. You may decide that you would rather spend small amounts and then play often. You may rather spend a big amount so that you have a better chance of winning a big amount of money and then risk losing it all in one go. The choice is yours and it is an important one. You may not want to risk losing all your money in one go, you may rather play more often for smaller amounts. However, you may only be interested in a big win and this will mean that you will have to gamble a large amount.

It is therefore important to not only decide on the strategy that you want to take with regards to how much you are going to gamble each day but also to make sure that you can afford to gamble the amount that you decide to spend.

Texas Hold’em Bluffing for Beginners

When playing Texas Hold’em an intricate part of playing this game successfully is having the ability to bluff other players into thinking that you have a hand that you do not. This is one of the thrilling aspects for those that play this game frequently since they know that it is their bluff that helped them to win the game. But, for those that beginning in the game, they are going to find that bluffing at the beginning is perhaps one of the overused techniques that these players walk away with that can lose them tons of games, if they are not careful about using this.

First off, most people often wonder why they should bluff when they are playing Texas Hold’em. The main reason is that this is going to help increase your wins since through bluffing you are able to win games that you should have lost. The person should realize that when bluffing they are giving away keys as to their bluffing and this can make it difficult when facing the same players in games to come.

There are tons of techniques and advice that are given on how to bluff properly; however, it all boils down to two things. The first is that the last hand in the game should have been a strong one and the opponents should have had a weak hand in order to give the person the doubt that they can win. Without these two things in place, you are gambling on whether the bluff will actually work or not.

The next topic to address is just how often a person should bluff during a game. The key is to find the timing in which a bluff would be useful. If you start to use a bluff each time, then players are going to know that you are bluffing, which takes away any credibility that the bluff may have had. Therefore, you should only do this when you know that the other players are going to fold and you know that you have the chance to win a decent sized pot. There is no need to waste a perfectly good bluff on a pot that is not worth your time. However, for those that beginning to play Texas Hold’em they will find that bluffing at the smaller pots can help to work on their craft and get a feeling for when they should and should not bluff. Overall, you should only bluff when you know that you can win and not overuse this as it does bring down your creditability.

Do You Know Your Poker Player Styles?

Studying your competition is really the difference between doing okay in poker and really doing extraordinarily well in poker. A lot of novice players feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information that you have to figure out before you get really good. Yet nothing says that you have to learn these things right away. You can build steadily over time.

Understanding poker style is understanding psychology. This is always a good thing. There are essentially 4 elements of playing style:

Tightness — this defines the quality of the hands played. The more hands that you play, the lower the average quality will be. There is something to be said about playing a lot of hands, because you increase the chance of “freak wins”. Still, you don’t want to play just anything that you see.

The second element would have to be aggressiveness. This is defined by how much the player leads the action, or just follows along. The more that the player bets and raises, the more aggressive they really become.

You’ll have three stats that hover around these concepts:

VPIP (voluntarily put into the pot)
PFR (preflop raise)
AF (aggression factor)

These are used in conjunction to study a player’s style in a nutshell. There are no hard and fast rules though — players can adapt things over time, and thus their numbers will slowly change. [Read more...]
